With Finding Dory coming out soon, my family and I decided to have a Finding Nemo inspired family night. Playing a bit with the dark, but, funny shark scene with Bruce, Anchor and Chum from Finding Nemo we dubbed it Fish Are Food, Not Friends Family Fun Night!
Obligatory meme…

Swedish Fish Anyone?
I had heard about the new Rollback on Swedish Fish (1.9 lb. bag) at Walmart for $4.48, these would work perfectly into our themed family night, but how? I also saw that the WalMart Family Mobile plan Starter Kits are cheaper than before and now on rollback for just $19.88 (through 7/7/16). This would be the perfect time to try out Walmart Family Mobile PLUS Plan tech. Then, I thought of it! I could work the Swedish Fish into and a new recipe for dessert! Dessert is not something we do very often at our house since we committed to “eating cleaner”. But, combing something yummy with the opportunity to check out some tech was exciting.
As a bonus, we would use the free monthly VUDU rental from the WalMart Family Mobile PLUS plan to provide the entertainment for our Fish Are Food, Not Friends Family Fun Night. And, what Nemo/Dory inspired family night would be complete without renting… you guessed it… Finding Nemo from the VUDU app on our Smart TV?
So, what to have to eat on our family night besides Swedish fish in a dessert? I did some thinking and came up with the following menu.
“Fish Are Food, Not Friends” Family Fun Night Menu
Main Course & Side Dishes
- Fish Sticks
- Cole slaw (recipe here. Note one change: Substitute celery seed for the listed poppy seeds)
- Sea Salt Sweet Potato baked fries
Dessert
“Fish Are Food” Swedish Fish & Strawberry Shortcake Parfait
I emailed my wife the menu and she replied, “Looks delicious”. With the menu agreed to, I headed over to my local WalMart with my daughter to shop for the all the stuff to pull this family night together.
Trip to WalMart

My local WalMart is about a 10 minute drive from our house. Close enough to be convenient for shopping. We try and plan for off peak visits (if possible) as this store is HUGE and serves a fairly large area. They must have known we were coming! Because before we entered WalMart there were signs for WalMart Family Mobile. :-)
We entered WalMart and rounded up everything for our family night. We started by picking up all the fresh ingredients (coleslaw mix, sweet potatoes) then, the fish sticks, whipped cream, angel food cake and something to make the parfait in. I figured it would be interesting to serve this dessert from something special for our family fun night. After all, dessert wasn’t something we had that often.
When I went to go find the Swedish Fish on Rollback, I noticed the package had changed. But, it’s just the package that changed, not the Swedish Fish
Next, we went back to the electronics department to see about the phones available on the WalMart Family Mobile plan. At first, I only saw the pallet display with the Samsung Galaxy phones, but a little more looking around and I found the aisle with the rest of phones.

I decided to purchase a Cool Pad Rogue– $19.88 (Rollback from $39.83). And with 10 GB of data and a free VUDU rental that seemed pretty cool. Some details on the Cool Pad Rogue phone:
- Bluetooth compatibility
- Internal memory: 4GB
- Headphone jack
- microUSB port
- GPS-enabled
- 4G capable
- Android 5.0 (Lollipop) OS
- 1GHz quad-core processor
- Talk Time: up to 6 hours
- Standby: up to 124.8 hours
I was pleasantly surprised that this phone was running Android 5.0 and had 4GB of internal memory, especially at this price point. This would be a great phone for someone looking to save money on their phone service or, a teen’s first smartphone.
With the phones located and my phone and starter kit selected, we walked up to the front of the store to checkout. I was happy to see we could use the 20 items or, less lane.

“Fish Are Food, Not Friends” Family Fun Night
For our Family Night, I really tried to maintain a balance of reasonably good for you foods and convenience. I compared a lot of frozen fish items and the sticks seemed about the best way to go when comparing calories and other nutrition information. I wanted to make it easy so we could focus on the family fun portion of our time together.

“Fish Are Food” Swedish Fish & Strawberry Shortcake Parfait
Swedish Fish
Strawberries, 1 container
Whipped Cream, 1 tub/container
Shortcake, 1 cake or, loaf

And, when tickets go on sale, we can use the data in the WalMart Family Mobile PLUS plan to buy our tickets for the premiere.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read and comment. I appreciate it!
great job, love the parfait idea and I haven’t had fishsticks for years hmmmm must try some soon I think
Thanks very much Linda! The parfait was fun! Yes, we’ve not had fish sticks in several years as well. Truth is, I compared the nutritional panels and the sticks were a little better than the frozen filets I looked at.
Great job! Very thorough post and very playful and fun family activity!
